Celebrating 25 Years of Ministry
I’ve produced a lot of events, but none quite like this one. We did this event in the round. We built a custom circular stage. We hung an LED halo with motion graphic content. We had live music, speakers from all over the world and we all wore tuxedos because tuxedos are awesome.
It was glamorous, but more importantly, it was a HUGE success. We raised over $3,000,000. Count the zeros. That’s $3,000,000 going toward water in developing countries. $3,000,000 going toward teaching people proper health and hygiene. $3,000,000 going toward doing all of this in the name of Jesus and leading others to know him.
I served as the creative director and technical producer for the event. As creative director, my job was to bring together the marketing collateral leading up to the event, the sensory experience of the night and the following up marketing after the event. As technical producer, I managed the teams that produced the show — lighting, sound, and video for the main event, the pre-function space and a VIP event happening on a different floor of our venue.
The Evolution of a Brand
Creating a brand from scratch is like cutting your own path through a forest of possibilities. It’s just you, your machete and the bush.
In the case of the 25 Gala we took inspiration from art deco. We watched Baz Lurman’s Great Gatsby, I was in New England during this time so I visited the Empire State building and other classic gothic and art deco landmarks in New York.
Each of these sources of inspiration breathed life into this look. Early on we took a brief trip into 3D country and I created several pieces in Cinema 4D. The more we developed the look, this direction wasn’t fitting the vision, timeline, or the budget so we scrapped it in favor a more flat illustrated look.
Before we start the show we gathered some Living Water’s top donors in a rooftop ballroom overlooking downtown Houston. For this event we wanted to keep the art deco motif but give it a little something extra to make it special for our VIP’s. This is the invitation for that event.
